At UWMC and HMC, clinical pharmacy specialists provide services to the inpatient psychiatric unit. This psychiatric service is comprised of patients with acute psychiatric illnesses for which patients require an intensive, well-controlled environment in a locked unit. Responsibilities to this service include monitoring and optimization of pharmacotherapy, pharmacotherapy education, and facilitating adherence to established treatment guidelines. Services include therapeutic drug dosing, medication compliance counseling, and discharge prescription teaching.

At HMC, clinical pharmacy specialists also provide services to the outpatient mental health center located on the HMC campus. Responsibilities include providing information regarding appropriate drug utilization and dosing regimens as well as the checking and dispensing of the patients medications.
