University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) is a 480-bed tertiary-care institution located north of downtown Seattle on the University of Washington campus. This academic medical center serves as a regional referral center and offers many specialized services to provide unique learning experiences. Specialized services found at UWMC include a multiple organ transplant program, cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, intensive care, oncology, a multidisciplinary pain center, and general psychiatry. UWMC also serves as a regional perinatal center with a neonatal ICU and a regional infant-transport program.

Ambulatory services include family medicine, internal medicine, and women’s clinics located at the University of Washington Medical Center-Roosevelt II satellite. Also available at UWMC are pharmacy-coordinated anticoagulation and diabetes monitoring clinics, an eye center, a cancer center, and surgery clinics.

Serving as a teaching and research resource within the Warren G. Magnuson Health Sciences Center, UWMC provides a high-quality education for students of the health sciences and an environment in which clinical research is conducted. UWMC encourages continuing education for health professionals and health-education programs for the public to advance and integrate contemporary healthcare standards and services throughout the state and the region it serves.

UWMC is a world leader in the development of innovative new techniques and treatments. Since opening in 1959, UWMC has achieved many medical milestones. Among them are the first patient to receive chronic artificial kidney dialysis (which was invented here), the first congenital defects clinic in the country, the first heart transplant in the Pacific Northwest, and the first total knee transplant in the Pacific Northwest.
