Harborview Medical Center
The 330-bed Harborview Medical Center (HMC) is a regional burn and trauma center providing educational opportunities in inpatient acute and emergent care, outpatient care, and mental health services. Nationally recognized programs in neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery, an NIH-funded epilepsy center, and a regional spinal cord injury/rehabilitation center contribute to HMCs rich environment for learning. HMC accommodates an air-ambulance service and serves as a training center and base station for the Seattle Fire Department Medic I Mobile Intensive/Coronary Care Program. HMCs mission emphasizes community service and patient-centered care. HMC strives to identify and promote new services and/or expand existing services to better meet the needs of the under-served and the economically or socially disadvantaged. Community-based outreach services at HMC include a sexual assault center, a community mental health center, and an AIDS clinic with an AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU). Patients also benefit from the services of HMCs pulmonary, diabetes, geriatric, refugee, and low-income clinics. HMC, along with UWMC, serves as a training site for nationally recognized schools within the health sciences, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, nutrition, and social work. HMCs orthopedic surgery program is reputed as a premier orthopedic research and training center, and HMCs head injury research has been nationally honored. The faculty that conducts HMCs research and training has also been honored many times for their valuable contributions. Award-winning research, nationally recognized and honored medical staff, and pioneering technology all contribute to meeting the needs of Harborviews patients today and in the future. |
