Residency in Pharmacy Practice (PGY1)

Goals, Requirements and Program Benefits (revised 8/24/07)

General Residency Goals:

  • Provide leadership to patients and other healthcare professionals in achieving optimal patient outcomes by promoting safe, cost effective therapies.
  • Demonstrate refined pharmaceutical care skills based on a thorough understanding of emerging health care systems.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make judgments, set priorities and assume responsibility.
  • Demonstrate effective teaching skills toward patients and other healthcare professionals.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Medication Use Evaluation (MUE) and policy formation.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI).

General Residency Requirements

  • Complete twelve one-month rotations.
  • Complete a clinical service or research project designed to improve the clinical pharmacy services of the department or achieve a specific research objective.
  • Participate in and complete a Medication Use Evaluation (MUE).
  • Present the results of the clinical service or research project at the Western States Conference for Pharmacy Residents and Preceptors.
  • Prepare and present a project at the Western States Conference for Pharmacy Residents and Preceptors.
  • Prepare and present drug monographs for the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Participate in an ambulatory continuity of care clinic throughout the residency program.
  • Participate in teaching activities at the medical center and the school of pharmacy.
  • Participate in residents’ meetings.
  • All residents have an integrated service commitment designed to assure that the residents can function as pharmacy generalists. To achieve this objective, residents are scheduled to work 32 hours per month in a distributive role.

Qualifications of Resident Applicants

The applicant must possess a Pharmacy Degree from an ACPE-accredited college or school of pharmacy and must be eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in the State of Washington. To be eligible to apply for a residency at the University of Washington, the applicant must also be registered with the ASHP Resident Matching Program. Selected applicants will be required to visit the University of Washington and Harborview Medical Centers for an on-site interview. Appointment to the residency program is contingent upon eligibility for employment according to the Federal Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, which requires employers to certify eligibility of employees to work in the United States.

Resident Stipend:
approximately $45,000 (2007-2008)

Vacation:
Ten working days

Holidays:
Residents will have five paid holidays that they will not be scheduled to work. Recognized holidays include: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day After Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

Professional Leave:
Residents will be allowed five days of professional leave for attendance at professional meetings.
