Residency Description:

The Health-System Pharmacy Administration Residency at the University of Washington is a post-graduate program, which provides 26 months of training centered on the principles of leadership and administration. The program combines academic studies with pharmacy practice management residency training. The academic component is provided through the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

UW Medicine (Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and University of Washington Medical Center) are comprehensive healthcare teaching facilities and serve as the primary sites for the residency. The residents integrated service commitment will be at either the University of Washington Medical Center or Harborview Medical Center. Rotations may be at any of the facilities. The resident will take a total of 26 rotations and will gain experience from these rotations through working with nationally recognized pharmacy practitioners and administrators in various areas of advanced pharmacy practice and leadership. Additionally, the resident will be involved in the planning, justification, implementation and evaluation of new and innovative pharmacy services.

The resident will be concurrently enrolled in the University of Washington Graduate School, Executive Master of Health Administration program.

To successfully complete the requirements for the Masters program, residents will complete research in an area of interest under the advisement and direction of a UW Medicine Administrator. Residents will also present research projects at the annual Western States Residents’ conference and the annual ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting.

Appointments are for a period of 26 months beginning July 1. The resident is required to staff 32 hours per month.

The resident’s first rotation will be orientation and training in the drug distribution service components of the Department of Pharmacy Services. Subsequent rotations during the first year of the residency will include a combination of Acute Care, Administration, Ambulatory Care, Drug Information and Electives.

Resident Stipend, First Year:
Approximately $42,000.

Vacation:
Ten working days

Holidays:
Residents will have five paid holidays that they will not be scheduled to work. Recognized holidays include: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday, President's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day After Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

Professional Leave:
Residents will be allowed five days of professional leave for attendance at professional meetings.
