PGY2 in Primary Care Pharmacy Practice

The University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center offer a PGY2 specialized residency in primary care that is an organized, directed, post-graduate training program, which focuses on the development of the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to provide pharmaceutical care professional practice skills in a primary care setting.  An academic component is offered with the University of Washington School of Pharmacy to those interested in teaching.   

 

Specialized Residency Goals:

  • Refine pharmaceutical care skills in a primary care setting.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and teaching skills.
  • Utilize critical literature evaluation and research skills promoting rational therapeutics in primary care.
  • Develop and maintain a collaborative primary care practice.
  • Participate in medication use evaluation, continuous quality improvement and policy formation.
  • Refine didactic and experiential teaching skills

 

Residency Description:

The specialty residency emphasizes refining primary care skills including evidence based pharmacotherapeutic consultations, motivational interviewing, coordination of patient care, patient assessment and triage, and effective communication with patients and providers.  The resident, through collaborative practice agreements, is active in providing direct patient care, consultations to patients and providers, patient / provider education, and chronic disease management.  The resident will be a co-instructor for the Pharmacotherapeutics lab practicum and precept PharmD candidates and PGY1 pharmacy residents.

 

The resident electing the academic component will participate in the teaching certificate workshops, explore the theories of education, student evaluation and providing feedback, development of syllabi / curriculum and test questions.  The resident will provide didactic lectures and be exposed to daily activities of academia. 

 

Practice Area:

The University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center are comprehensive healthcare teaching facilities and serve as the primary sites for the specialty residency.  Harborview Medical Center is a county hospital whose mission is to provide care for a diverse patient population.  Harborview Medical Center has two primary care residency sites available:  Adult Medicine Clinic and Family Medicine Clinic.

 

The University of Washington School Of Pharmacy is nationally recognized as an innovator leader in pharmacy education, scholarship, research and will be the academic practice site.   

 

Specialized Residency Requirements:

  • Develop a clinical service or research project designed to improve primary care services in the Department of Pharmacy Services.
  • Prepare a poster presentation at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting.
  • Present the results of the clinical service or research project at the Western States Conference for Pharmacy Residents and Preceptors. 
  • Submit a project for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Prepare and present ambulatory-related drug monographs for the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee.
  • Present two seminars.
  • Participate in teaching activities of the medical center and school of pharmacy.
  • Have an integrated service commitment of 32 hours per month.
  • On-Call duty for Pharmacist-run DVT Program.
  • Participate in residents’ meetings.

 

Resident Stipend:  Approximately $48,000                          Vacation: 10 working days

 

Holidays: Residents will have five paid holidays that they will not be scheduled to work.  Recognized holidays:  New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day After Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

 

Professional Leave:

Residents will be allowed five days of professional leave for attendance at professional meetings.

Period of Appointment:

One year commencing on July 7, 2008.  (Please note health insurance is effective August 1, 2008)

 

Qualifications of the Applicant:

Selected applicants will be required to visit the University of Washington for an on-site interview.  The applicant must meet the following general requirements:

  • Pharm.D. Degree from an ACPE-accredited College or School of Pharmacy.
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency or equivalent experience.
  • Must obtain licensure in the State of Washington prior to the start of the residency.
  • Appointment to this residency program is contingent upon eligibility for employment according to the Federal Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, which requires employers to certify eligibility of employees not born in the United States.
